Personal Statement

Carly Rae Henderson is a Hispanic Linguistics Ph.D. candidate and associate instructor of Spanish in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Indiana University Bloomington. She is from Phoenix, Arizona and received a B.A. in Spanish, a B. A. in Political Science and an M.A. in Spanish from Arizona State University. Carly’s research interests include the effects of type, timing and target of corrective feedback, computer-mediated communication, task-based language teaching methods, and learner individual differences on the acquisition of Spanish as a foreign language. She is currently working on projects on feedback timing and the acquisition of Spanish vocabulary in synchronous computer-mediated communication, a task-based needs analysis for Spanish foreign language learners, the elicited imitation task as a measure of Spanish proficiency at different levels, the production of vowels in continuous speech by classroom learners of Spanish, and native vs. nonnative status of the interlocutor, modified output and noticing of feedback by learners of Spanish.

Carly has worked with the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages for High School students studying abroad Spain and México. Carly is an Associate Editor of the Spanish and Portuguese Review, the graduate journal for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. She is also co-creator and co-manager of the Task-Based Language Teaching Support Site at Indiana University(tblt.indiana.edu). During her free time, Carly enjoys traveling, hiking, reading, cooking, and studying nutrition.
